MBHS Athletics Ranked #5 Nationally

The Mountain Brook High School Athletic Department was once again ranked among the top programs in the country for the 2023-24 school year in a ranking distributed by MaxPreps. The Spartans 2023-24 campaign landed them in the number five spot nationally and as the top ranked team in the state of Alabama.

“This is certainly a significant recognition and I’m very happy for our student-athletes and coaches for all the success we were able to have last year,” MBHS Athletic Director Andy Urban said. “Ultimately, our goal is to provide the best experience for our kids and our programs. This recognition shows that the commitment our coaches display throughout the year paired with the dedication our athletes have to their sport and adding on the support we receive from our parents and community, Mountain Brook Spartan Athletics is the standard.”

According to their website, the MaxPreps Cup is a competition that attempts to determine the best overall high school sports program in the nation. The algorithm is based on state championships, runner-up finishes and national rankings. Points are awarded for the size of the state the school is from, the popularity of the sport, the enrollment division the school participates in and the number of schools participating in that enrollment division.

Mountain Brook won nine accredited state championships for this ranking during the 2023-24 school year:

  • Boys cross country
  • Girls cross country
  • Girls volleyball
  • Boys wrestling
  • Girls indoor track
  • Boys tennis
  • Girls tennis
  • Girls soccer
  • Girls outdoor track

The boys basketball team finished as the state runner-up. Although not calculated in the MaxPreps Cup algorithm, the boys wrestling team also won the 6A duals state championship.

The top 10 rankings nationally are as follows:

  1. Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.)
  2. Western Albemarle (Crozet, Va.)
  3. Bentonville (Ark.)
  4. New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.)
  5. Mountain Brook (Mountain Brook, AL)
  6. Wesleyan (Norcross, Ga.)
  7. Bedford (N.H.)
  8. Edina (Minn.)
  9. Carmel (Ind.)
  10. Champlain Valley Union (Hinesburg, Vt.)

“We are excited to continue to build upon last year’s success and create more exciting opportunities for our kids and programs this coming year,” Urban said.
