Tuesday, September 10, 2024 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday, September 9 at Brookwood Forest Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:

Board members present: Jenifer Kimbrough, Anna Comer, Nicky Barnes and Daniel Odrezin.

Board Meeting Agenda

The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting.

Recognitions:

• Members of the 2024-25 PTO Council were recognized for their commitment and service to the school system for this school year.

Reports to the Board:
MBS Chief School Financial Officer, Kari Austin, presented board members with the district’s monthly financial statements, which were unanimously approved.

MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, presented the monthly facilities update.

Dr. Dicky Barlow presented the annual Enrollment Report and Mountain Brook Schools has 4,359 students enrolled in Kindergarten through 12th grade for the 2024-2025 school year. 

Dr. Missy Brooks then presented the annual Student Assessment Report. A story will be published later on the data from the report.

Dr. Elizabeth Grimes and Jana Watts spoke to board members about their experience at the 2024 New Teacher Institute which took place in July.

FY 2025 2nd Budget Hearing Meeting

The FY 2025 2nd Budget Hearing Meeting took place as Kari Austin (Chief Schools Financial Officer) presented the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

New business:

• The board unanimously approved the latest personnel recommendations and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.
• Policy I-8 Live Work in Career/Technical Programs, Policy I-10 Cooperative Education Program and Policy I-11 Safety in Career Technical Education Program were all tabled for community review and input. Those can be seen by clicking here.
• Policy J-16p Standard Diploma, Policy J-16q Advanced Diploma and Policy J-16r Advanced Diploma with Honors were all approved.
• The Superintendent Evaluation and Contract Extension was also approved.

• Weather Day Monday October 14, 2024 (all schools and offices closed)
• The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, October 21st at 3:30 p.m. at Cherokee Bend Elementary with the work session starting at 2:00 p.m.
