Brookwood Forest Named 2024 National Blue Ribbon School
Brookwood Forest Elementary was officially named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, September 23, 2024. Brookwood Forest is one of 356 schools nationwide to receive this recognition which “highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.
“Ironically, being recognized seems like a particularly appropriate time to remind everyone that we are flattered, but never motivated, by such honors and recognitions,” BWF Principal Nathan Pitner said. “We want every moment to be reflective of our efforts to come together to create an environment where every Ranger can grow into a learner who actively and successfully engages in the world. That’s as true when we’re recognized for those efforts as it is when we’re not.”
This is the second time Brookwood Forest Elementary has received this distinction. The first recognition was during the 1998-1999 school year. Each school in the Mountain Brook school district has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon school at least once.
“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”
A description of Brookwood Forest Elementary can be read below:
Brookwood Forest Elementary is blessed with a name that captures our aspirations for our learning community. We can not imagine a more apt metaphor for the growth of a child than that of a seed to a healthy tree. It’s even more impactful to imagine the power of a group of trees being unified in supporting each other in that process. Our school cheer, Many trees, one Forest, is reflected throughout our school community.
This year our school will celebrate our 60th anniversary by welcoming roughly 580 preschool through sixth grade students (or Rangers) into our doors. They are met daily by teachers devoted to knowing, caring, and engaging with all students. Most days begin with morning meetings that nurture trusting relationships to empower Rangers to push their own learning. Students participate in engaging opportunities designed by teachers who customize instruction based on the learners’ responses to the work. The result is our Rangers’ profound sense of ownership in their own growth. That sense of ownership is mirrored in teachers that prioritize professional learning and best practices to meet the social and academic needs of our students. This supports our mission of providing an effective, challenging, and engaging education for every one of our students.
We are tremendously proud that our community, many of whom are parents and grandparents who were themselves Rangers, regard our school as a home away from home. It is our greatest privilege to come together to create fertile soil for all Rangers to learn and grow.
