MBJH Students Shine at Junior United Nations State-Wide Assembly

Congratulations to both 7th and 8th grade JUNA delegations for their accomplishments at this weekend’s JUNA conference. Their hard work showed tremendously through their speeches, costumes, enthusiasm, display boards, and so much more.
12 MBJH students recently made waves at the state-wide Junior United Nations of Alabama Assembly (JUNA) in Oxford, AL. JUNA is a student-run simulation of the U.N. for middle schoolers, fostering awareness of global issues and teaching diplomacy and cultural understanding.
Our 8th-grade team, representing Mongolia, tackled the complex issue of how to prevent fatalities and ailments that are being caused by a lack of clean drinking water. Guided by 8th grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Strickland, the delegation drafted a resolution aiming to provide water filters attachable to pipe systems coming from Mongolian reservoirs. Their resolution not only passed through committee but also impressed the General Assembly, earning them two awards. Addy Meadows received an Outstanding Girl Delegate award and Liam Duncan was named an Outstanding Boy Delegate (Honorable Mention)!
Meanwhile, our 7th grader delegation, representing Australia, crafted a resolution focused on controlling invasive species through the implementation of AI technology and public awareness initiatives. Led by World Language teacher, Mr. Posey, the delegation proposed the rebuilding of animal habitats and removal of invasive species with the help of two UN agencies.
JUNA was a transformative experience: students sharpened critical thinking, empathy, and ethical decision-making while tackling real-world problems.
